Nicolas Jackson scored both goals for Aston Villa in a 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Saturday, bringing an end to the visitors' flawless start to the Premier League season. The defeat at Villa Park marks the first loss for Manchester City under manager Enzo Maresca this year, halting a remarkable run of seven consecutive wins in his debut season with a new club.
The match began with a swift blow to the visitors. Just six minutes into the game, a heavy touch from Marc Guehi placed the ball at Jackson's feet. The striker cut inside Elliott Anderson and unleashed a high shot that sailed past Gianluigi Donnarumma, giving Villa an early lead. Despite the setback, Manchester City retained control for much of the first half, pressing aggressively to find an equalizer.
Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki proved to be a constant obstacle for the visitors. He made key saves to deny Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov. Ndiaye also found the post during the first half, keeping the score at 1-0 at the break despite the sustained pressure from the champions.
The deadlock was broken in the 52nd minute. Erling Haaland rose highest to power in a header from a Ndiaye cross. This goal marked his 13th in just 10 appearances this season, highlighting his continued dominance. Moments later, Josko Gvardiol had a chance to put City ahead, but his fierce drive was turned onto the crossbar by Suzuki.
Aston Villa responded exactly one hour into the match. Ibrahim Mbaye was played in behind the City defense and delivered a cross that Jackson converted with a low shot. Donnarumma should have been able to save the effort, but the ball slipped past him to seal the victory for the home side. City pushed for a late equalizer but could not break through the resilient Villa defense.
The result has significant implications for the top of the league table. Arsenal now has the opportunity to level the points with Manchester City if they defeat Everton at home later on Saturday. For Villa, the win is their sixth in seven games across all competitions, moving them up to sixth place in the standings.
The victory underscores the work Unai Emery has done over the past four years. He has transformed the club from a dormant force into a regular Champions League participant. This achievement is particularly notable given that six players who started in last season's Europa League victory have left during the recent transfer window. Emery has successfully rebuilt the squad to maintain competitive strength.
New summer signings including Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi are already showing their impact after a slow start to the campaign. Their contributions have been crucial in securing recent results and helping the team navigate the loss of several key players.
Manchester City had managed to keep winning despite uncertainties surrounding their future in the Premier League. The 10-time English champions are currently appealing a guilty verdict on more than 100 charges related to financial rule breaches between 2009 and 2018. Potential sanctions could be severe, including the possibility of relegation. While the situation did not appear to affect the players' performance significantly, two sloppy defensive errors ultimately cost them the match at Villa Park.
