AI Agent Wars: Anthropic targets the professional class with Claude Duet
The new application positions itself as a business tool rather than a personal assistant, aiming to automate workflows for small enterprises and professionals.

The competitive landscape for artificial intelligence is shifting rapidly, moving away from simple chatbots toward autonomous agents that execute tasks on behalf of users. In this crowded arena, Anthropic is making a distinct strategic move with the launch of Claude Duet. Unlike its competitors that focus on personal errands or general consumer utility, the new application is specifically designed to serve professionals and small businesses. This positioning allows the company to differentiate its product in a market saturated with new entrants, including Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo.
Anthropic is drawing a sharp line between its new offering and the personal assistant model. The company explicitly states that Claude Duet is not intended for handling everyday chores such as booking tickets or running errands. Furthermore, the agent does not provide a live view of its browser activity while it works. Instead, the focus is on workflow automation and data management. This distinction is crucial for business clients who require reliable backend processing without the distraction of watching the AI navigate websites in real time.
The core functionality of the app centers on creating daily briefings, generating custom dashboards, and suggesting actions based on user data. Similar to other leading agents in the market, Claude Duet operates by completing tasks in the background within its own virtual machine. This allows users to continue their own work while the agent processes information. If the agent encounters a decision point that requires human input, it will pause and request approval before proceeding, ensuring that critical steps are not taken without oversight.
This launch coincides with a broader market trend where major technology firms are pivoting toward business use cases. While Meta’s Muse remains primarily a personal assistant, the company has also released a version tailored for small businesses with enhanced app connections. OpenAI’s Dots similarly emphasizes a business slant through its integration with professional tools. Anthropic is following this trajectory, aiming to capture a segment of the market that values productivity and operational efficiency over casual conversational interaction.
Under the hood, Claude Duet is powered by the Claude Opus 5.5 model. A significant advantage for enterprise users is its connectivity. The agent can link to more than 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. This extensive ecosystem allows the tool to integrate with a wide variety of software services, making it a versatile addition to existing business tech stacks. The ability to connect to such a large number of third-party services is a key selling point for small businesses looking to streamline their operations.
Financial transactions are a critical part of business automation, and Anthropic has enabled Duet to make online purchases on behalf of users. This feature is supported through integrations with Stripe’s Link digital wallet and Shopify’s Shop Pay. However, the company has implemented safeguards to manage risk. Sensitive steps, particularly those involving payments, require explicit user approval. This ensures that the agent does not spend money or commit to purchases without a human in the loop.
To further protect user data and limit liability, the agent has specific boundaries regarding financial actions. Claude Duet will not trade securities or transfer money between bank accounts. This restriction helps define the scope of its financial authority, keeping it within the realm of standard e-commerce and service purchases rather than complex financial management. This cautious approach is likely intended to build trust with business users who may be hesitant to give an AI full control over their financial accounts.
Security is another priority in this release. Anthropic has introduced a new classifier that scans each message to prevent sensitive information from leaking out of the system. By default, the agent is programmed to decline requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification details. This proactive security measure addresses a common concern among professionals who handle confidential client data or personal financial information.
Claude Duet is currently available on iOS and Android platforms, as well as through the web interface at Claude.ai. The app is available to Pro and Max customers in a research preview phase. To access the tool, users must join a waitlist. This phased rollout allows Anthropic to manage server load and gather feedback from early adopters before a wider general availability release.
