Israeli Forces Raze Hebron District Ahead of Critical Vote

Thousands are being displaced as military bulldozers destroy homes in the Ein Deir Baha area following a deadly checkpoint attack.

The West Bank city of Hebron is currently sealed off by a dense network of military checkpoints, creating a tense atmosphere for its 250,000 residents. In a swift and aggressive response to recent violence, Israeli troops have demolished significant portions of the Ein Deir Baha district, forcing hundreds of families to flee their homes.

Local Palestinian authorities describe the operation as a form of collective punishment for a militant attack that took place at an army checkpoint outside the city. The Hebron municipality reports that approximately 35 hectares, or 86 acres, of land in the affected district have been destroyed or marked for imminent destruction. By Saturday afternoon, officials stated that roughly 1,500 people had been forced to leave their residences. The city remains under a strict lockdown, with barriers established at every point of entry to control movement.

Visual evidence from the ground reveals the scale of the devastation. Videos shared by a local resident show entire urban blocks reduced to rubble, with every house in the affected area flattened. One clip captures soldiers spraying black crosses onto the walls of Palestinian homes, while another shows a heavy bulldozer tearing down a stone wall on a hillside. In a striking image, a large residential building is draped in Israeli flags. Residents indicate that the structure belonged to a prominent local family and has been converted into a temporary military headquarters.

The military action followed a violent incident on Friday when two gunmen attacked an Israeli military checkpoint near Hebron. A twenty minute gunfight ensued, resulting in the death of two Israeli soldiers and injuries to three others. Both gunmen were also killed in the exchange. The Ein Deir Baha district was identified as the home area of the attackers, which local leaders say is now the primary target of the retaliatory demolitions.

Political leaders are using the crisis to galvanize support before elections scheduled for four days from now. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the scene of the original attack and pledged an immediate and fierce response. He stated that Israel would act to destroy the area. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who is running in the upcoming vote with a smaller coalition party, was filmed in body armor standing in front of a Palestinian building as it was being demolished. Smotrich announced that he had ordered the immediate demolition of a wide row of structures he termed illegal, and he called for a comprehensive military campaign similar to those seen in Gaza and Lebanon.

The human cost of the operation is mounting quickly. A spokesperson for the Hebron municipality confirmed that about 300 families have been formally evicted. While some residents have found temporary shelter with friends or relatives, the municipality has opened community halls and children's play areas to accommodate the displaced. The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that Israel plans to displace an additional 2,500 people in the coming days, suggesting the operation is far from over.

Civil rights activists are voicing strong objections to the scope of the military response. Issa Amro, a Hebron activist, condemned the operation as a punitive measure against a population that did not commit the original attack. He noted that his own sister's family was among those driven from their homes. Amro described the situation as a painful example of suffering being turned into political material for the upcoming elections, with innocent families bearing the brunt of the conflict.

In a telephone interview, Amro emphasized that hundreds of families have left their homes despite having no connection to the Friday attack. He expressed uncertainty about the long term intentions behind the demolitions, questioning whether the action is merely election propaganda or part of a serious strategic plan for the post election period. The scale of the displacement has left many residents without clear answers about their future.

The Israeli army has been approached for comment regarding the operations and the videos showing widespread destruction. As the city remains sealed and the demolition work continues, the coming days will be critical in determining the final extent of the impact on the Hebron community ahead of the national vote.
